“Integrating Crossmatch’s fingerprint reading technology into Lenovo’s new ThinkPad lets healthcare professionals keep their data secure and control who is accessing it without slowing them down while providing care.” – John Hinmon, Vice President of Marketing, Crossmatch
A new healthcare-focused laptop from Lenovo uses biometric security to help keep patient data safe, thanks to Crossmatch. On the occasion of this year’s HIMSS event in Orlando, Crossmatch has announced that the Lenovo ThinkPad T490 Healthcare Edition features one of its FIPS 201-compliant fingerprint readers.
This isn’t the first time Lenovo has integrated a fingerprint reader into one of its laptop devices. The ThinkPad X1 Tablet, a two-in-one device launched in 2016, featured a fingerprint sensor from Synaptics; and so did another device launched later that year, the Lenovo Yoga Book. But in developing a solution for the highly regulated healthcare sector, it appears that Lenovo felt compelled to go opt for a biometric solution from a new supplier.
The aim, of course, is to control access to the laptop and its sensitive patient data through the use of fingerprint-based authentication. As Crossmatch Marketing VP John Hinmon explained in a statement announcing the integration, “Hospitals and other healthcare settings are fast-paced environments, harboring huge amounts of secure patient data,” and the integration of a FIPS 201-compliant fingerprint reader “lets healthcare professionals keep their data secure and control who is accessing it without slowing them down while providing care.”
The news comes after Crossmatch was acquired by HID Global last September, and during this week’s HIMSS 2019 event, which runs until February 15th.
