University of Utah Health Care will use Imprivata’s PatientSecure platform to better administrate patient records. The deal will see Imprivata’s biometric technology used across four university hospitals and 11 community clinics, and is expected to be used in processing the records of almost 1.6 million patients annually.
PatientSecure uses palm vein biometrics to create a 1:1 link between a given patient and her medical records, helping to ensure that those records are managed accurately, avoiding duplicate documentation, and saving health care systems on administrative costs. It can also help to fight the threat of fraud; in a statement announcing the agreement, University of Utah Health Care CIO Jim Turnbull explained that Imprivata’s system “enables clinicians to have an accurate medical history of the patient they are treating and also protects our patients from medical identity theft and insurance fraud.”
It’s an increasingly popular solution as healthcare administrators seek to leverage sophisticated information technologies to improve efficiency and patient security. PatientSecure has already been used in hundreds of hospitals to identify millions of patients, and as Imprivata continues to showcase its solutions to the healthcare sector, many more clients are likely to follow.
