Haneda Airport Praises Materna for Biometric Passenger Screening Deployment

German company Materna IPS (Intelligent Passenger Solutions) is celebrating a successful deployment of a biometric authentication solution in the more than 100 self bag drop kiosks it had recently installed throughout Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport.

Integrated prior to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games, the Materna IPS One ID journey solution provides traveler identity verification for customers at Haneda, the world’s 4th largest airport .

This allows individuals to enroll in the airport’s Face Express system at any of the 104 bag drop kiosks in an effort to greatly streamline the passenger processing experience. The process works by having a passenger’s scanned government-issued ID matched against an image of their face captured by one of the kiosks; facial recognition algorithms are then used to authenticate the identity of the individual.

“On behalf of TIAT including management level, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to Materna IPS to release this program before Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which is one of our goals of this project,” said Yuya Yamazaki, Technical Project Manager for the Tokyo International Air Terminal Corporation.

Materna’s partnership with Haneda arrived at a time when the importance and popularity of contactless airport biometric technology has been growing at a rapid pace due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Face Express system was introduced at Haneda earlier this year through a partnership with NEC. Face Express allows passengers to check in, pass through security checkpoints, drop their luggage, and board their flights, all with facial recognition scans.
