Passengers flying out of Hamad International Airport can now check in, drop their bags, clear security, and board using their face instead of a boarding pass, under a biometric program the Doha hub has built with Qatar Airways and technology partner SITA.
The program, called Fast Pass, connects more than 700 touchpoints into a single biometric journey, which SITA describes as one of the largest rollouts of its kind in the Middle East and worldwide. Travelers enroll once through the Qatar Airways mobile check-in application or at a self-service kiosk in the terminal, a step that takes a few seconds, after which their face serves as their credential all the way to aircraft boarding. SITA’s self-service bag-drop units carry out the same facial verification.
Fast Pass is powered by SITA technology, and the company has built comparable face-based journeys on its Smart Path platform at other airports, including a trial at Istanbul Airport that it credited with cutting passenger processing times. SITA, which has pointed to accelerating biometric adoption across its airport and airline business, says the model verifies a passenger once and then recognizes them at each step, allowing airports to handle rising volumes without longer queues. The company cited IATA research indicating that most travelers now prefer biometric identification over physical documents.
Enrolment is optional, and staff remain on hand for anyone who prefers standard document checks. Qatar Airways said it plans to extend Fast Pass to transfer passengers and to other airlines operating from the airport to support smoother connections between flights.
“The way people move through airports is changing, and trusted digital identity is at the center of it,” said Selim Bouri, President, Middle East, Africa & Türkiye, SITA. “When a passenger is verified once and recognized across the whole journey, the airport runs more smoothly and the traveler stays in control of their data.”
The airport said it intends to widen the service over time, including enrolment and verification beyond the terminal itself.
