Mobbeel will be providing mobile onboarding services for a digital bank in Guatemala. CUENTA DIG&TAL is affiliated with the more established Banco G&T Continental, and will be deploying Mobbeel’s MobbScan solution through G&T’s GTCAPP app to make sure that everyone who signs up for a digital account is in fact the person that they claim to be.
MobbScan is comparable to similar onboarding offerings, insofar as it compares a selfie to the image on an official government ID to verify the identity of a new user. The solution will allow DIG&TAL to comply with the latest Know Your Customer regulations, while customers will be able to open an account with a smartphone without needing to enter a physical branch.
The news solidifies Mobbeel’s presence in Guatemala. The company recently provided biometric onboarding capabilities for PRONET’s Akisí app, a centralized payment service that can be used for digital and in-store transactions. Both that deal and the new DIG&TAL deal have the backing of Veentrix, which acts as Mobbeel’s local partner in Central America.
The deployment is in keeping with a broader digital banking trend in Latin America. FacePhi, for example, has already provided its own selfie-based onboarding solution for several banks in Panama and Mexico.
