The GOV.UK One Login digital authentication and identity-proving service has achieved integration with 50 government services as of last month, marking a significant milestone in the Government Digital Service (GDS) initiative’s initial three-year phase. This achievement comes as part of the UK government’s broader digital transformation strategy, which aims to consolidate and streamline access to public services.
The Department for Education’s ‘Confirm My Apprenticeship’ service became the 50th service to integrate with the platform. Five apprenticeship services now use GOV.UK One Login, including Find an Apprenticeship, Apprenticeship Assessment Service, Apprenticeship Provider & Assessment Register, and Employer Services.
The platform enables users to access multiple government services with a single username and password, eliminating the need for multiple credentials. Users save approximately six minutes each time they access a new service after proving their identity. This streamlined approach represents a significant departure from the previous system, where citizens needed separate accounts for different government services.
“We’ve now integrated five Apprenticeship services with GOV.UK One Login, and it’s been a game-changer for our apprentices, the supporting services and our department,” said Gary Tucker, Deputy Director of Digital Skills Portfolio at the Department for Education. “It shouldn’t be difficult for apprentices to create and manage their account, and now with GOV.UK One Login, the end-to-end process is so much smoother.”
The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has set a target to expand the number of integrated services to 100 by the end of 2025. All departments are required to establish their adoption plans and begin implementation by March 2025. This expansion builds on ongoing efforts to ensure interoperability with other regional systems, including Scotland’s ScotAccount digital identity system.
Minister for AI and Digital Government Feryal Clark explained: “Whether applying for apprenticeships, requesting a basic DBS check or reporting a medical condition to the DVLA, people can now rely on a consistent, accessible platform that removes barriers and improves accessibility. With GOV.UK One Login, we are shaping a future where public services are as easy to access as any modern online platform ensuring a seamless, secure experience for all.”
The implementation of GOV.UK One Login is projected to generate savings of hundreds of millions of pounds in taxpayer money through enhanced efficiency and security measures. The platform incorporates security features designed to prevent fraudulent access to government services, addressing growing concerns about digital identity theft and unauthorized access to government systems. While the platform currently focuses on government services, the Open Identity Exchange has recommended against extending the service to the private sector, suggesting that private digital ID solutions should develop independently.
