Google and Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe Launch EU’s First Google Wallet-Based Age Verification

Germany’s largest retail banking group, Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, has partnered with Google to introduce the European Union’s first national digital age verification system integrated with Google Wallet. Announced at the Global Digital Collaboration Conference in Geneva, the initiative will enable more than 50 million Sparkasse customers to verify their age online using secure digital credentials stored in their mobile wallets.

Privacy-Focused Age Verification

This new system is designed to address growing regulatory pressure for robust, standardized age verification across the EU, particularly for accessing online services such as adult content platforms and social media. The partnership follows recent advances in digital age verification technology and builds on Google Wallet’s earlier identity solutions, including the UK’s passport-based digital ID rollout in April 2025.

The Sparkasse-Google system uses Google’s Credential Manager API and zero-knowledge proof cryptography. This means customers can confirm they meet an age threshold, such as 16+ or 18+, without disclosing their exact date of birth or other personal details. Sparkasse remains the data controller under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), issuing the verified credential while Google facilitates its secure transmission to third-party services.

Once enrolled, customers will receive a verified age credential through the Sparkasse banking app. When accessing participating websites or applications, users can confirm their age with a single click, eliminating the need for document uploads or sharing sensitive information beyond proof of age eligibility.

Regulatory Context and Rollout Timeline

The initiative arrives as the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) prepares to enforce new rules requiring proportionate age verification measures for certain online services from 17 February 2025. Additionally, the region is advancing pilots under the eIDAS 2.0 regulation, aiming for more unified digital identity systems across member states.

While similar national systems exist in Europe – such as France’s FranceConnect and Italy’s SPID – the Sparkasse-Google collaboration is the first nationally scaled age verification program directly integrated with Google Wallet. The service is planned to begin a pilot phase in the fourth quarter of 2025, with broader public availability targeted for the first half of 2026, according to statements from both companies and interviews published by Heise.

Though initially focused on age attestations for 16+ and 18+ thresholds, the system is expected to expand to cover additional age bands and potentially other forms of digital identity verification in the future. Integration will work seamlessly with Android devices and the Chrome browser via the Web Federated Credential Management (FedCM) API, while support for other platforms, such as Apple Wallet, has not yet been announced.
