Goodix Supplies In-Display Biometrics for Huawei P30 Smartphones

Huawei has a new flagship phone, and Goodix‘s fingerprints are all over it.

The new Huawei P30, and the larger P30 Pro, is the latest high-profile smartphone to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. And China-based Goodix is once again the supplier of Huawei’s biometric technology, further cementing its leading position in a mobile market that seems increasingly interested in this kind of technology.

As for the sensor’s functionality, the verdict is pending. A hands-on account of first impressions for TechRadar said the sensor “seemed pretty fast”, but cautioned, “we’ll have to test how natural it feels to use over an extended period of time”; similarly, CNET said it’s “uncertain” if the P30 Pro’s optical fingerprint sensor is faster than the ultrasonic in-display sensor used in the Samsung Galaxy S10, adding, “All will become clear after days of using it dozens of times a day.”

In any case, Huawei’s main focus with the P30 seems to be its imaging capabilities, with the phone featuring a four-sensor rear imaging setup that includes a 40MP “SuperSpectrum” lens, a 20MP ultra-wide angle lens, an 8MP zoom lens, and a Time-of-Flight sensor for 3D imaging. There is also a 32MP selfie camera.

The P30 and P30 Pro are on sale now in select markets, but not the US, given ongoing tensions over Huawei’s alleged breaches of sanctions.
