Goode Intelligence has published a new report heralding the ascent of digital identity in the travel sector. The aptly named “Travel Digital Identity – Seamless Travel Powered by Digital Identity” predicts that this nascent technology area will generate more than $4.6 billion in revenues by 2029. That reflects a 22 percent CAGR from 2024.
Broadly speaking, various travel stakeholders are quickly recognizing the benefits of using contemporary digital technologies to verify travelers on their journeys by air, land, and sea. This could include mobile-based digital IDs and face-scanning systems that can quickly match travelers to their passports.
On the government side, the trend is being driven by the ICAO Digital Travel Credential standard and biometric border control schemes such as the European Union’s impending Entry-Exit System. Meanwhile, airports, airlines, train, and ship operators are pioneering their own commercial efforts for identity proofing, ticketing, bag drop, and other application areas.
The report also looks at the importance of e-passports, which have been established as the primary international identity documents and can encode detailed traveler information, including biometric data, in an embedded chip. And it assesses what Goode Intelligence describes as a compelling business case for digital travel identity technologies, given benefits that accrue across all parts of the travel and border control ecosystems.
“The report identifies that travel is offering a blueprint in how to digitize identity and provide realizable benefits that can be replicated by other sectors,” explained report author Alan Goode. “Travel offers a great test bed for the wider digital identity market and is a key sector for growth, offering a template for how digital identity can be at the center of the seamless customer (traveler) experience.”
