The global biometric payment cards market is forecast to grow from $321.9 million in 2025 to $6.47 billion by 2035, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 35 percent, according to Future Market Insights. This rapid expansion signals a shift in how consumers complete financial transactions, with security and convenience shaping adoption strategies worldwide.
Market leadership and technology
Credit cards are expected to account for 59.3 percent of the market in 2025. These products feature embedded fingerprint sensors that authenticate the cardholder directly on the card, reducing reliance on PIN entry while maintaining a PIN fallback option in many cases. Networks such as Mastercard and Visa are driving biometric card programs, while technology companies like Apple and Google are expanding the use of biometric authentication in digital wallets. The United States market is projected to lead with a 70.4 percent compound annual growth rate from 2023 to 2030, with significant activity also reported in Turkey, India, South America, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Recent deployments illustrate this momentum. Federal Bank in India has launched the country’s first biometric authentication system for e-commerce card payments, enabling card-not-present transactions verified through device biometrics. In Qatar, QIIB and Visa have introduced biometric Click to Pay technology, allowing customers to approve online purchases with passkeys and biometrics.
Adoption trends and challenges
“There is adoption and we are moving out of the pilot phase into production, albeit on a smaller scale than forecast in the early 2020s,” says Alan Goode, CEO and Chief Analyst at Goode Intelligence. “In 2025, the focus on premium segments is a priority for the biometric payment card ecosystem.” High manufacturing costs currently limit deployment to premium cardholders, and privacy considerations remain especially important in markets with strict data protection laws. Mobile and touchless biometric payment solutions are competing for market share, with forecasts of more than one billion touchless biometric payment transactions worldwide by 2030.
In several developing markets, premium-segment launches are being used to address high fraud rates. Analysts report that banks in Colombia are turning to biometric cards to strengthen security in a market where card fraud is a persistent issue. In South Asia, Pakistan has mandated biometric verification for over-the-counter cash deposits and withdrawals via mobile wallets such as JazzCash and Easypaisa, effective July 1, 2025.
Many consumers now maintain both biometric cards and digital wallets, selecting the most suitable option based on the transaction type and environment. As production costs decline, privacy safeguards strengthen, and consumer familiarity increases, biometric payment cards are positioned to play an increasingly important role in global financial transactions.
