Ghana has commissioned a cutting-edge electronic gate (e-gate) system at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to improve passenger clearance, streamline immigration processes, and bolster border security. The initiative was commissioned by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
The e-gate system will incorporate advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, biometrics, and real-time data processing, to offer a seamless and secure travel experience. It will also integrate the Ghana Card’s biometric and digital capabilities, allowing for efficient verification and reducing the reliance on traditional immigration checks.
The development is part of Ghana’s broader efforts to modernize its identity systems, as seen in the recent launch of the chip-embedded passport that complies with International Civil Aviation Organization standards.
Designed to enhance operational efficiency, the system is expected to significantly reduce waiting times, enabling travelers to complete clearance in as little as 15 minutes from landing to exit. It will be designed to operate both online and offline, ensuring uninterrupted processing even in areas with limited connectivity.
In terms of security, the e-gates are expected to enhance border protection by cross-referencing biometric data against national and international databases, minimizing the risk of fraud or unauthorized entry. They will also facilitate the tracking and management of individuals of security concern.
Plans are underway to extend the e-gate system at major airports, land borders, and seaports across the country, ensuring consistent standards nationwide. This includes implementation at other airports such as Tamale and Kumasi, as well as land and sea borders.
“Built by Ghanaians for Ghanaians, the E-GATE system showcases the strength of local expertise,” said Vice President Bawumia. “It integrates advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and real-time data processing, positioning Ghana as a global pioneer in intelligent border control.”
The e-gate system is being developed and designed by Margins Group, a domestic technology firm, in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Aviation Authority, Ghana Airport Company Limited, and other stakeholders.
