Diebold Nixdorf has introduced AI-based age verification technology at a newly reopened 24/7 self-service grocery store in the village of Freckenfeld, Germany.
After closing in May 2023, the village store reopened with a self-service concept to ensure continuous access to essential goods. Diebold Nixdorf equipped the store with two DN Series EASY eXpress self-service checkouts, designed for cashless payments and operating in an unmanned mode. These systems can handle incomplete transactions by resetting after a set period.
During early operating hours employees are present to restock shelves and assist customers. During this time, when purchasing age-restricted items, customers can choose to use the facial biometrics-based Vynamic Smart Vision I Age Verification solution instead of having an employee conduct a traditional ID check.
When no staff are available, the area of the store containing age-restricted items can only be accessed using the same automated system that authorizes payments.
“Our ‘Dorfladen Freckenfeld – Powered by EDEKA Paul’ offer has been very well received,” said store operator Benedikt Paul. “We are delighted that, together with the residents of Freckenfeld, we have been able to develop a new approach to convenient local shopping that optimally meets the needs of our customers with a modern store concept and innovative technologies, while at the same time enabling cost-effective operation.”
Diebold Nixdorf, a leader in automating banking and retail sectors, connects digital and physical channels to enhance consumer convenience and security. The company operates in over 100 countries with around 21,000 employees worldwide.
“The village store in Freckenfeld is a successful example of how modern store technology with self-service checkouts can help to ensure that local supplies, which are urgently needed in rural areas in particular, are available around the clock.,” said Matt Redwood, Vice President of Retail Technology Solutions at Diebold Nixdorf. “The automatic, AI-based age verification solution also enables a faster checkout process. This pleases customers and allows employees to concentrate on their core tasks.”
