Dutch identity solutions provider GenKey is going to provide the technology and support for an ambitious biometric healthcare management system in Kenya, the company has announced. Together with a local partner, GenKey will provide software, hardware, training, and additional support services to the country’s National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
To start, the program will have two major components: an electronic management system for generating claims, and a biometric smart card solution for patient identification, with the latter aimed at helping to improve authentication, facilitate member registration, and eliminate patient record duplication. Going forward, GenKey will eventually develop an insurance application that will provide the main means by which the NHIF will process claims.
In a statement announcing the contract, GenKey CEO Michiel van der Veen expressed assurances that Kenya’s NHIF would benefit from GenKey’s “accessible, affordable and high-quality health management information system that will help increase efficiency and curb fraud.” He also pointed to the contract’s importance to GenKey, calling it an “important milestone” that “brings us one step closer to our ambition of becoming the leading provider of digital healthcare solutions for Africa and other emerging markets.”
Also helping push GenKey along in these efforts is its ongoing product development: At the end of May, the company upgraded its FastAFIS biometric matching system SDK; and earlier that same month GenKey also launched a large-scale, cloud-based identity management platform called SPiRE ID. It also launched a powerful fingerprint matching system earlier this year. While the Kenya project is hugely ambitious, it seems reasonable to expect continued output from GenKey as it strives to solidify and expand its market position.
