Platform Update Brings Gemalto Smart Cards Into eIDAS Compliance

Gemalto has issued an update of its Public Key Infrastructure to ensure compliance with new regulations.

The European Union’s new eIDAS (Electronic Identification and Services) regulation is meant to ensure trust in digital transactions, offering standards pertaining to the kinds of digital signatures enabled by Gemalto’s PKI. Accordingly, Gemalto says the latest version of its PKI-based SafeNet IDPrime smart cards are compliant with the pertaining specification. That means organizations using these smart cards are eligible to become Qualified Trust Service Providers associated with the EU’s Trust List.

In a statement announcing the upgrade, Gemalto Identity Protection SVP François Lasnier lauded both digital signature technology, which he said can streamline “many day-to-day activities”; and the eIDAS regulations, which “will help ensure these transactions are safe, legally binding and recognized across borders.”

Beyond its SafeNet IDPrime smart cards, Gemalto’s PKI platform also comprises middleware, USB tokens, and other authentication solutions.
