Gemalto Wins Airport Biometrics Contract for Uganda

Ugandan authorities have awarded a contract to Gemalto to deliver a Border Management System (or ‘BMS’) revolving around airport biometrics screening.

The project will see Gemalto working with local partner SCINTL, and will build on the Gemalto Visa Management System, which Gemalto delivered to Uganda’s Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control back in 2014. Its new Border Management System will be deployed first at the Entebbe International Airport in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, and will be focused on the installation of fingerprint- and face-scanning eKiosks.

In a press release announcing the contract, Gemalto explained that once the BMS has been deployed, “passengers will enjoy the option of a rapid, self-guided pathway through border control, whilst authorities are provided with comprehensive, real-time data on departures from Uganda.”

Gemalto’s statement did not disclose the value of the contract, but indicated that the project will be completed this year.

Commenting on the project, Uganda’s Minister of Internal Affairs, General Jeje A. Odongo, called Gemalto “a proven and valued partner” of the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, adding that the new border control solution “marks the latest step forward in the modernization, enhancement of security of border control management in Uganda, delivering important benefits for visitors and citizens alike.”
