Fujitsu Aims for Naked Payments, Access Control with Combined Facial and Palm Vein Solution

Fujitsu has combined its palm vein scanning technology with facial recognition in a new authentication solution concept.

It’s a contactless, kiosk-type solution, in which users need only to wave a hand over a palm scanner while standing in front of a face-scanning camera. In announcing the development, Fujitsu emphasized its potential applications in event venues, which could use it for access control, and in physical stores, where the technology could be used to replace payment cards.

Fujitsu has lately been increasingly focused on the latter application area, announcing last month that it was working to deploy cashless betting machines with the Japan Racing Association. The machines are designed to link end users’ palm vein biometrics to prepaid cards, effectively allowing them to perform transactions with only a biometric scan.

Fujitsu says it will detail its new face- and palm vein-scanning system at the International Conference on Image Processing 2018 in Athens on October 7th, and that it will exhibit the solution at CEATEC Japan 2018 on October 16th. Fujitsu “aims to make this technology practical within fiscal 2020,” according to a statement from the company.
