Fujitsu has announced a new cloud-based biometric authentication service for enterprise clients. It’s called BIOaaS, for Biometrics-as-a-Service.
BIOaaS operates out of Fujitsu’s recently opened Intelligent Security Operations Center in Dallas, and runs on K5, Fujitsu’s cloud computing program, though it’s also available via Amazon Web Services. It supports multiple biometric modalities beyond the palm vein scanning technology that has been Fujitsu’s specialty, including mobile-based fingerprint, facial, and voice recognition.
In a statement announcing the service, Fujitsu America’s Head of Security for Americas Jason Bradlee pointed to the recent Equifax data breach as “another reminder that even innovative organizations are struggling with cyber threats that are potentially staggering in scope,” adding later that the use of biometrics as additional authentication factors “means that cyber criminals are unable to utilize large collections of identity information, and they will likely move on to less secure institutions.”
The system’s launch comes after Fujitsu announced an IoT-focused biometric authentication service near the start of this year, suggesting that the company is doubling down on its commitment to offering biometric authentication services.
