France Identité Adds iOS Sandbox and Tests Privacy-Preserving Age Verification

France Identité, the French government’s mobile digital identity application, has made its sandbox build available on iOS, bringing the testing environment into line with the existing Android sandbox. Both versions now support OID4VP 1.0 (OpenID for Verifiable Presentations), enabling relying parties and verifiers to conduct end-to-end flow testing ahead of European Digital Identity Wallet interoperability requirements.

Anthony Carmoy, Technical Director of the France Identité program, said: “Early testers can now experiment with France Identité sandbox builds on both Android and iOS, and validate concrete end-to-end flows.” Florent Tournois, Director of Identity for France Identité, also described the successful completion of the first age assurance unlinkability test conducted in real conditions. The test demonstrated that age verification can be performed without any tracking, using a privacy-by-design architecture in which the identity provider cannot link separate age verification transactions to the same user. Tournois said the result “effectively delivers on the app’s privacy by design promise.”

The unlinkability test implements requirements established in the European Commission’s age verification use case manual for the EUDI Wallet, which set selective-disclosure and privacy-preserving standards for cross-border age assurance. France maintains one of the EU’s most developed age-verification regulatory frameworks, including double-blind method requirements for adult content platforms, with social media age restriction legislation anticipated.

France is among seven EU member states, alongside Denmark, Greece, Italy, Spain, Cyprus, and Ireland, that have committed to integrating their national age verification solution into the EUDI Wallet. These front-runner states are supported by an EU-wide coordination mechanism developed as part of the EU age-verification app rollout across member states. The mechanism provides accreditation of national solutions and cross-border issuance and acceptance of proof-of-age attestations.

Under eIDAS 2.0, EU member states are required to offer EUDI Wallets by the end of 2026. The iOS sandbox development builds on France Identité’s launch as a mobile digital identity app as France prepares for EUDI Wallet implementation. The France Identité team indicated it will progressively expand testing capabilities by adding more credentials and supported protocols.

France’s EUDI Wallet implementation MoU brought together France Titres, Orange Business, Sopra Steria, and Thales to align national implementation ahead of the eIDAS 2.0 deadline.
