The RedmiBook Pro 15 from Xiaomi is the first machine to feature Fingerprint Cards’ (FPC) new fingerprint solution for the PC market. The fingerprint sensor has been integrated into the power button of the device, while the software powering it is compatible with Windows 10. As a result, end users will be able to use the sensor when performing a biometric login with Windows Hello or the Microsoft Enhanced Sign-in (SecureBio) solution.
FPC launched its new PC solution in August in an effort to meet the anticipated demand for fingerprint sensors in desktop and laptop devices. The company believes that a full two-thirds of the new PCs that get shipped will come with a built-in fingerprint sensor by 2026, and is already positioning itself to capture a dominant 40 percent share of the market. FPC has placed sensors in PCs in the past, though its new solution is a more specialized computer product.
“We see a positive trend in demand for biometric authentication in consumer and enterprise PCs, and I’m pleased to see the first commercial product launched with our new solution for the market,” said FPC Mobile Business SVP Ted Hansson. “We are poised for continued growth in this segment, providing the perfect way to add convenient and secure authentication to PCs.”
In October, FPC revealed that a top-tier manufacturer would be featuring the new PC solution in models that would hit stores in the first quarter of 2021, though it did not disclose the identity of its partner at the time. It’s unclear if Xiaomi is the company in question, even if the release timeline does line up with earlier announcements.
Xiaomi is also the first company to launch mobile devices with FPC’s latest side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The FPC1542 will appear in the Redmi K40, K40 Pro, and K40 Pro+.
