Another major PC maker is integrating biometric technology from Fingerprint Cards.
In announcing the development, FPC declined to name its customer, which it described as one of the world’s top three PC manufacturers. It’s also a new customer for Fingerprint Cards, which means the company now works with two of the world’s top three PC manufacturers.
The customer’s work to integrate the sensor into a new device is “ongoing”, and FPC says it expects the first volume shipments of its sensors to go out to the client by the end of the year.
It’s another indication of the commercial opportunities that FPC is now pursuing in the emerging PC biometrics market, one of multiple strategic efforts aimed at expanding beyond the mobile biometrics space in which Fingerprint Cards made its name. The company launched a new biometric solution tailored for PC and laptop integrations last summer, and went on to see its technology used in a laptop device from Xiaomi.
Such PC integrations, together with ongoing business in the mobile sector, helped to drive strong revenues for FPC in its most recent quarterly update. The company is also eyeing opportunities in the nascent biometric payment cards market.
“I am very pleased with this additional design win in the PC segment,” commented Fingerprint Cards SVP Ted Hansson. “We are poised for continued growth in this segment, providing the perfect way to add convenient and secure authentication to PCs, thus doing away with the hassle of using insecure passwords and PINs.”
The news comes shortly after FPC’s announcement that it had received a follow-up order from a client in the physical access control sector, and in the wake of FIDO Biometric Component Certification for its partner FEITIAN’s biometric security key featuring FPC technology.
