FPC Introduces World’s First Smart Card with an Embedded Fingerprint Sensor

It’s been some time since we last reported on Fingerprint Cards AB (FPC) outside of the mobile device fingerprint biometrics market, with the company’s aggressive stance in Asia being a constant staple of recent smartphone news. Today however, FPC announced the launch of a biometric smart card that features an embedded touch sensor and processor by UINT & Mereal Biometrics.

Designed for access control in a variety of scenarios, the multi-application smart card is the first ever to actually have a fingerprint sensor embedded on to it. According to UINT CEO Philippe BLOT, this was no easy feat: “Introducing biometrics into the smart card market means meeting the toughest industry requirements available when it comes to low power consumption, optimized form factor and robust sensor design.”

According to FPC president and CEO Johan Carlström, the project has been four years in the making, and it looks like the time was well spent: the new smart card is a finalist in the Discovery award category to be presented in November at the Cartes convention in Paris. Partouche, a French casino operator will be among the first adopters of the new technology, deploying the solution for logical access control.
