FPC Details Benefits of Fingerprint Sensors in PCs

Fingerprint Cards (FPC) is encouraging equipment manufacturers to integrate fingerprint sensors into their PCs. The company noted that the PC market has boomed in the past few years, and that customers are increasingly looking for products that offer the same convenient authentication experience that they currently enjoy on their mobile devices.

A PC with a fingerprint sensor can deliver that utility. The technology allows users to access devices and applications with a simple biometric scan, thereby eliminating the need to remember a large number of passwords. On a shared device, the computer can also link someone’s fingerprint to their personalized settings (both at home and at work), and ensure that only those with the proper permissions are able to access certain materials.

From there, the fingerprint sensor can support a number of different applications once someone logs into a device. For example, the technology can enable online payments in web browsers, with FPC noting that some tasks (such as booking a vacation) are easier on a PC than they are on a mobile device that can only display a limited amount of information.

Since fingerprint sensors are already being used to authorize transactions with mobile phones and biometric payment cards, the deployment of sensors in PCs will create a consistent payment experience across all platforms. The technology also has advantages in the current remote work environment, insofar as it gives employees a secure way to access corporate resources when they are not at the office.

FPC has previously predicted that a full two-thirds of all new PCs will include a fingerprint sensor by 2026. The company has indicated that it is hoping to capture 40 percent of that market, and recently released a new PC line of products to advance those aims. That PC solution made its commercial debut in Xiaomi’s RedmiBook Pro 15 earlier this year.
