A new partnership has been struck between Sweden-based biometrics company Fingerprint Cards AB (FPC) and China-based touch panel company O-Film. The partnership will see FPC’s fingerprint sensor technology integrated into O-Film touch panel modules.
In a press release, the companies stated that the primary aim of their partnership is to seize upon the opportunities in the expanding Chinese market, especially with respect to opportunities with OEMs in the field of mobile commerce. And indeed, mCommerce in China does seem poised to explode, with Apple, Alibaba, and Android all poised to face off in the country over the course of the year as they each introduce their own platforms. Given the ubiquity of biometric – and particularly fingerprint scanning – security on mobile devices, which has developed in tandem with mobile commerce, it seems very likely that FPC and O-Film will find a ready market for their offerings.
As biometric technology is increasingly integrated into devices in other fields, biometrics developers are looking around for other companies that might act as vehicles to deliver their technology into those applications. This seems to have been the case in other partnerships announced this week – between Sensory Inc. and Nok Nok Labs, for example, and also between IDEX ASA and Trustonic.
