Fortress Identity Platform Gets Biometric Liveness Detection

Biometric authentication platform Fortress Identity has announced the addition of Passive Facial Liveness to its Authentication-as-a-Service platform in an effort to allow its customers to verify the identities of their clients remotely and protect against identity fraud.

Passive Facial Liveness — now available on the Fortress Identity platform — uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to determine whether the authentication subject is a living person (as opposed to a photograph, mask or model) without requiring movements of the face such as blinking or smiling.

Fortress Identity CEO Alessandro Chiarini likens the technology to the famous ‘Turing Test’, developed by English mathematician Alan Turing in 1950 as a sort of measurement of a machine’s ability to mimic human behavior.

“If we translate that to today’s’ advancements in utilizing biometric authentication in use cases such as digital payments, e-learning, and telemedicine, we need to accurately, and with minimal friction, determine if a bad actor is trying to spoof the system… and gain access to a particular transaction and/or additional sensitive private user data, resulting in a loss for both the victim and the customer,” explained Chiarini.

Passive Facial Liveness works in concert with facial recognition to help verify the identity of an individual and match them to an existing user profile to authenticate and approve a transaction, with Fortress providing digital ID verification covering over 7000 document types.

“We are always looking to make the customer experience, both during onboarding a new customer, and subsequently in authenticating future transactions, as frictionless as possible, while maintaining the highest level of security,” said Chiarini, adding that this is why Fortress’s platform was designed to support biometrics, device authentication, and other security factors.
