SITA is welcoming back a former executive as its new Americas President.
Matthys Serfontein first joined the airport IT specialist in 2007, as SITA’s Regional Vice President for the Application Services Business Unit in Africa. The next year, he became SITA’s VP of Airport Solution Portfolios, a position he held until 2010, when he became VP of the Airport Operations Portfolio. In 2012 Serfontein became the VP of SITA’s Airport Solution Line, and in 2018 he became President of Air Travel Solutions.
He held that last position until the summer of 2020, when he left SITA. On his LinkedIn profile, Serfontein indicated that he was ‘spending time with his family at Serfontein Investments’.
Now, in a phase of normalization after the most intense periods of the COVID-19 pandemic, Serfontein is returning to SITA to help lead the organization in its mission to bring digital transformation to the air travel industry.
“As travelers return to the skies, our customers are eyeing digitalization as the key to returning to growth while meeting the new expectations of today’s passenger,” Serfontein explained. “With its innovative portfolio, SITA is uniquely positioned to support them.”
On that note, SITA offers a number of innovative solutions for airport modernization, including AI-driven optimization tools through the SITA Airport Management platform, and biometric check-in and bag drop kiosks.
Serfontein’s return to SITA comes after David Lavorel was promoted to the position of CEO in February. For his part, Lavorel welcomed Serfontein back to the team and emphasized that he has a considerable portfolio of solutions to promote to the air travel industry.
“The Americas team, under Matthys’s stewardship, will help bring these exciting benefits to customers in the region,” he said.
