Tools for Humanity, the company behind the Worldcoin crypto-ID project, has added former Google and Apple executives to critical roles overseeing its digital ID efforts.
Co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Alex Blania, TFH has been spearheading an effort to establish a global digital ID program through Worldcoin, a subsidiary that registers the biometrics of end users in order to establish unique, authentically human identities on a blockchain platform. Worldcoin has become notorious for using iris-scanning devices called “Orbs” to get end users signed up, and for offering cryptocurrency to these users in exchange.
Rich Heley, who formerly held executive positions with Apple, Meta, and Tesla, has now been appointed to oversee these Orbs. According to a statement, as TFH’s Chief Device Officer, he “will lead the design, performance and accessibility” of the devices. Heley comes to the firm from a previous role as Facebook’s Head of Product Integrity, and had previously been Director of Alloy Engineering for Apple and VP of Product Technology for Tesla.
Another former Google executive, Ajay Patel, will hold an important role as Head of World ID. Patel was previously the head of the Google Payments and Digital Identity team, and will now lead the product strategy and rollout of World ID, the identity component of Worldcoin.
Worldcoin has already built its foundational digital ID platform on Layer 1 of the Ethereum blockchain. But this World ID system will soon get expanded functionality thanks to the forthcoming launch of World Chain, a Layer 2 system that will be closely linked to World ID and enable verified users to conduct a wide range of transactions.
In addition to Heley and Patel, Tools for Humanity has appointed Damien Kieran, formerly of the X social media platform and BeReal, as its Chief Privacy Officer. And it has named Adrian Ludwig as its Chief Information Security Officer. Ludwig has previously served as Google’s director of Android security and as CISO and Chief Trust Officer for Atlassian.
