The government of Florida has abruptly shuttered its mobile ID service and is looking for a vendor to help it build a replacement.
The state had first announced a mobile ID-focused collaboration with Thales back in 2020, designating the latter as its official Credential Service Provider. The mobile driver’s license app was ultimately launched in 2022, with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) having spent about $1.5 million on the project.
Roughly half a million people have since signed up to use the app. Now, they’re being asked to delete it, and the mobile ID service has been deactivated.
The FLHSMV has not given a reason for deactivating the mobile ID system. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the app could be difficult to use, with some users complaining about problems with a selfie-based enrolment system.
Thales’ contract with the agency expired on June 30, and the company has reportedly elected not to compete in the bid to revive the mobile ID project.
In an email message to users of the app, the FLHSMV said that “once a new vendor is selected, improvements will be made to the Florida Smart ID application,” adding, “We expect the new app to be developed by early 2025 and will notify you via email at that time.”
