FinGo has partnered with Enduring Net and Blockpool to link people’s vein biometrics to their COVID-19 credentials. The three parties have already completed a successful pilot at the Warren Manor Day Care facility in Blackpool, and are now moving forward with plans to bring the solution to other sectors.
In the Warren Manor deployment, facility staff were asked to register their vein patterns using a FinGo scanner. The results of that scan were then linked to Enduring Net’s EN-Covid passport, a new digital identity solution that stores the user’s personal information in addition to COVID-19 test results and their vaccination status. From there, staff can simply present their finger at another venue to verify their identity and prove that they are free of COVID-19.
The EN-Covid passport was developed with an Innovate UK grant, and leverages Blockpool’s blockchain-based Self Sovereign Identification (SSI) technology. As a result, the solution allows people to confirm their vaccination status without disclosing any other personal information. FinGo suggested that organizations in the transportation, education, and healthcare sectors could use the passports to enable the safe reopening of facilities in the midst of the pandemic.
“The ability to identify people and present their authorised COVID-19 status instantly, at the door, without breaking any privacy laws, has been invaluable for us,” said Independent Living owner Spencer Gibbons. Independent Living operates the Warren Manor Day Care facility. “After the difficulties we’ve seen with Track and Trace, and following our trial, both myself and my team feel this system could be pivotal for the care sector.”
“Our technology is more efficient than physical records, completely secure, accessible to any user and can be readily rolled out to other care homes across the UK,” added FinGo CCO Simon Binns. “SSI is an incredibly secure way to store personal data and combined with vein ID biometrics, it could form the basis of a new approach to health passporting.”
FinGo is best known for its Fingopay naked payments system, which allows customers to authorize purchases with finger vein authentication. The latest news indicates that the company is looking to find new applications for its technology, and speaks to the UK’s interest in secure and private health credentials. Fast Company, meanwhile, recently listed FinGo as one of the most innovative companies in Europe.
