“With its upgraded Touchless 2.0 platform, Fingerprint Cards says it is targeting a range of application areas including mobile devices, payments, the automotive sector, and access control.”
Fingerprint Cards continues its expansion beyond fingerprint recognition with the announcement of Touchless 2.0, a biometric platform combining facial recognition and iris recognition.
While FPC gained renown primarily for its success as a provider of fingerprint sensors to smartphone makers, it began to target both new market areas and new modalities in recent years as the mobile biometrics market became saturated and sensor ASPs sank. The company acquired iris recognition specialist Delta ID in 2017, and announced that it was developing its own facial recognition technology in early 2018.
With its upgraded Touchless 2.0 platform, Fingerprint Cards says it is targeting a range of application areas including mobile devices, payments, the automotive sector, and access control. Its platform enables authentication from a distance of up to 50cm, or just under 20 inches; and FPC says its FRR is three times better than it was in the previous generation.
“As a company at the forefront of biometric innovation, we are constantly looking to develop and improve our products,” commented FPC CTO Pontus Jägemalm in a statement announcing the new platform. “Iris recognition is a proven way to securely authenticate a user and by combining it with face recognition, our improved touchless portfolio now seamlessly balances trust with convenience, regardless of the form factor it’s deployed in.”
The announcement comes after Fingerprint Cards saw a return to profitability in its Q2 update this past August, suggesting that the company is enjoying a certain dynamism as its expansion into new business areas continues.
