As announced earlier this week, Fingerprint Cards AB (FPC) published its second quarter earnings report. Originally scheduled for publication on August 22, the report comes on the heels of FPC’s lowered sales projection for the year and shows what Fingerprint Cards president and CEO Johan Carlström calls “the best in the company’s history.”
The second quarter brought with it a slew of design wins (DW) in Asia: four for new mobile phones and a tablet device from a well known Asian customer, a win from one of the top three manufacturers in China for a new Smartphone, a DW from a two-tier Chinese smartphone brand, as well as one from an unspecified Chinese top-ten competitor.
As touched on in Fingerprint Cards’ earlier statement, Microsoft’s strong support for capacitive area sensors for login authentication in future Windows OS is among the chief reasons, along with persistent iPhone 5S fingerprint scanner rumors, that 2014 is shaping up to be strong for the company. These two factors are also leading several tier-one OEMs to reconsider using area sensors (as opposed to swipe sensors) for projects, which, while a very favorable situation for FPC, is going to keep 2013 without profitability.
According to Carlström, the second quarter has shown the company’s highest sales levels to date. Collaboration with Microsoft has given FPC an incredibly positive outlook for the coming years, which serves as a reason for the company’s board of directors to accelerate the recruitment of new tech development and support staff during the second half of the year.
