FIDO Alliance Executive Director Andrew Shikiar has provided a progress update on the organization’s ongoing mission to eliminate the need for passwords. In a new video interview with the Information Security Media Group, he explains that FIDO is now turning its attention to websites and encouraging web developers to offer support for FIDO2 protocols in their online channels.
“The Web authentication protocol and the FIDO2 standards, for the first time, present an open, public API that any developer can use to add FIDO to their site,” Shikiar said in the interview.
Shikiar noted that most of the world’s major mobile platforms and web browsers now offer native support for FIDO2. Android, for example, introduced FIDO2 support in the early stages of 2019, while Apple followed suit with last month’s Safari 14 announcement. Apple did not join the Alliance until February of 2020.
In the meantime, FIDO has continued to try to educate the public about the benefits of passwordless technology, most notably with the release of the new I-Mark symbol that will make it easier to tell which products are and are not FIDO2 compliant. The organization has also launched a loginwithFIDO website to teach consumers about FIDO authentication, while Shikiar himself will soon be participating in a FIDO webinar that will address Europe’s incoming PSD2 requirements.
