Twenty-five individuals wanted by police in China have been apprehended after being identified by facial recognition technology deployed at a major beer festival, reports The Guardian.
Police were stationed alongside camera systems equipped with the biometric technology at entrances to the Qingdao event; among their captures was a fugitive who had been on the run for 10 years. The technology was used not only to identify wanted criminals, but to turn away individuals with criminal records, who were refused entrance.
Facial recognition is proving increasingly popular among government authorities in China. The technology will soon be used for traveller identification at Beijing’s main airport, and Chinese authorities recently mandated the use of facial recognition at ATMs in Macau as part of an effort to combat money laundering.
Of course, the use of facial recognition to catch wanted criminals isn’t restricted to China, with a camera-equipped police cruiser having recently prompted one such individual’s arrest in Wales.
