FaceTec Offers Free Unlimited 2D Biometric Liveness Checks to All Customers and Partners

Renowned biometric face authentication and liveness detection specialist FaceTec announced today that all of its customers and partners can now use its 2D Single-Frame Liveness Detection solution for free. The offer includes unlimited liveness checks and is available through any of the company’s distribution partners listed on Liveness.com.

FaceTec’s 2D Single-Frame Liveness Detection adds an additional layer of biometric security to two-dimensional face matching and authentication scenarios, working with photos as small as 150 pixels. Boasting an effectiveness of over 97 percent in FaceTec’s presentation attack detection testing, the 2D solution can protect systems from the most common spoofing attacks.

Of course, FaceTec is a 3D face authentication company, and the free release of its 2D liveness technology is aimed at enhancing security in scenarios where 2D biometrics are more commonly deployed. The company gives customs checkpoints at airports, and retail self-service lanes as examples.

In a press release announcing the gratis liveness detection, FaceTec CEO Kevin Alan Tussy explained, “2D Liveness and Matching will never be as good as 3D because there’s not nearly as much data in a 2D photo as in a 3D FaceMap, but 2D Liveness Detection can still have a place in some security plans. By offering free 2D Liveness, we will provide security to those who aren’t using any Liveness at all, and educate about the fully remote authentication scenarios that do require our more advanced 3D Liveness technology.”

The liveness detection protecting the company’s flagship 3D Face Authentication is supported by a $100,000 spoof bounty, which offers payouts across five presentation attack levels, covering the most advanced malicious activity facing biometrics systems, including video feed injection. In a recent two-part interview with FindBiometrics, Tussy forwarded the idea of upgrading 2D systems, saying: “we encourage legacy biometric vendors to partner with us, like Gemalto/Thales did, to bring 3D Liveness to their customers and future-proof their photo databases by appending 3D FaceMaps to the user’s record once they’ve been matched against the 2D photo on file for the user.”

This 2D Biometric Liveness Detection offer is firmly in the spirit of offering protection against spoofers as ongoing digitization propels companies to upgrade their identity and access systems.

As FaceTec CTO Josh Rose put it, “This basic, yet effective anti-spoofing security layer is best utilized with a single photo captured in a semi-supervised environment where the user is unlikely to replay a deepfake video or bypass the camera using video injection software. Any scenario where those attacks can happen still require 3D Liveness Detection.”
