“The CaixaBank ATM solution is designed to analyze a customer’s face with a 16,000-point scan, pointing to a high level of accuracy.”
Spain’s CaixaBank has launched biometric ATMs that leverage facial recognition for user access.
The system has been unveiled in 20 ATM terminals at four branches in Barcelona. CaixaBank customers have the option of using either the traditional PIN for access or opting for facial recognition, which allows them to access their accounts with a simple scan and no need for further authentication steps.
It’s the product of a collaboration with Fujitsu and biometric authentication specialist FacePhi. The latter has demonstrated its prowess in face-based authentication over the last couple of years with its Selphi system. The mobile solution allows users to access online accounts by authenticating with a simple selfie, and has been embraced by numerous financial services institutions.
The CaixaBank ATM solution is designed to analyze a customer’s face with a 16,000-point scan, pointing to a high level of accuracy. According to CaixaBank, a pilot study ahead of the system’s rollout found 70 percent of participants expressing interest in using facial recognition instead of a PIN for account access, with 66 percent highlighting the security of biometrics.
The bank says it will roll out the system to more branches during the second half of this year.
