FACEIO, a cross-browser facial recognition framework, has unveiled its new Age Verification Widget, released as an addition to its FACEIO SDK suite.
The tool integrates into web and mobile platforms, using facial analysis algorithms for real-time age verification, with the aim being to assist businesses in adhering to age-related regulations across various regions, and thereby potentially reducing legal risks and promoting a more controlled digital environment.
FACEIO’s solution prioritizes speed and accuracy. The widget rapidly differentiates between adults and minors, and streamlines compliance with potentially complex age-related regulations for businesses. FACEIO also seeks to provide comprehensive documentation, facilitating the widget’s integration by developers and enabling its use across diverse digital platforms.
The Age Verification Widget has applications in industries including online gaming, content streaming, and digital marketplaces, and supports the regulation of content according to user age, potentially enhancing protections for minors online.
The launch comes at a time when online age verification is becoming an increasingly hot-button issue in the biometrics and identity spaces. Just last month, the Open Technology Institute (OTI) issued a report cautioning against the widespread use of digital IDs and facial recognition for online age verification, arguing that these technologies pose privacy and security risks and are not yet developed enough to be reliable or protect user data. Meanwhile, the UK’s communications regulator has issued draft codes for online child safety that are poised to boost the use of face-based age assurance and digital ID technologies.
