EyeLock Inc., a biometrics company specializing in iris-scanning technology, is demonstrating a prototype of an iris-scanning laptop at this year’s CES. The laptop is the product of a partnership with ODM Wistron NeWeb Corporation (WNC), and will have EyeLock ID technology embedded directly in the hardware.
EyeLock and WNC have also announced plans to embed EyeLock’s technology into network devices, automotive applications and set-top boxes further down the line. It’s possible that such developments could help set the commercial standard for digital security in the burgeoning Internet of Things, which will see a wide variety of everyday devices connected online and vulnerable to security breaches without the right technologies protecting them.
Biometrics, of course, is key in this fight, as suggested by the nonprofit FIDO Alliance, whose certification standards EyeLock has been keen to meet. The company also recently announced that its myris device is the only iris identity authenticator to meet FIDO’s 1.0 specifications. That’s a big boon for the handheld USB iris-scanner, which is already enjoying the limelight as a 2015 CES Innovation Awards Honoree.
Speaking on the certification, FIDO Alliance president Michael Barrett congratulated the company as a pioneer in the world of digital security, noting that the industry is “starting to move users and providers alike beyond single-factor passwords to more secure, private, easy-to-use FIDO authentication.”
