EyeLock Patent Links Iris and Face Biometrics

EyeLock has received approval for its 45th patent, the company has announced.

Patent No. 9,613,281 describes a system linking a captured iris image with a certain face image in a process involving a single user. According to the company, the system includes a mechanism ensuring that both biometric modalities are capturing from a live scan, and could be used for continuous, passive authentication.

In a statement announcing the new patent, EyeLock CEO Jim Demitrieus said the patent is “very timely given the multi-modal biometric capabilities that have recently come to market on flagship smartphones,” possibly referring to Samsung’s latest flagship devices, which feature biometric fingerprint, face, and iris scanning and are expected to prompt competitors to embrace multimodal biometrics as well.

The patent’s issuance comes soon after EyeLock’s announcement of a new iris scanning device designed for rugged deployments, the Nano EXT.
