“The aim is to enhance border security while maintaining traffic flow, and is in part a response to the volatile Brexit situation that has already begun to challenge border authorities.”
GetLink, the Paris-based operator of the Eurotunnel between Britain and France, has unveiled new biometric e-Gates for the tunnel’s customs control center.
The development arrives alongside GetLink’s announcement that it had officially handed over control of the Douane-SIVEP control center to French officials with the Ministry of Agriculture. Among the new control center’s features are nine unloading docks, 100 parking spaces for trucks, 1,000 square meters of office space, an equine facility, and two coach halls, which will house GetLink’s new e-Gates.
Eurotunnel officials had previously announced that they intended to add facial recognition technology to the Channel Tunnel in the form of PARAFE E-Gates. The aim is to enhance border security while maintaining traffic flow, and is in part a response to the volatile Brexit situation that has already begun to challenge border authorities.
The new e-Gates are currently awaiting official approval from authorities, but in a statement announcing the developments, GetLink said they “will speed up French border police checks” once they go into action.
