HID Global is urging policymakers in the US to link electronic prescriptions for controlled substances (EPCS) to the databases of prescription drug monitoring programs as a means of combating America’s opioid addiction crisis.
Jerry Cox, part of HID Global’s IdenTrust team, put forward the argument at this week’s Food & Drug Administration hearings on the crisis, testifying at the FDA’s Opioid Policy Steering Committee. IdenTrust supplies the digital certificates used in electronic prescriptions, which are used to verify that the prescriptions come from an authorized medical practitioner.
In a statement elaborating on HID Global’s position, the company’s Vice President of IAM Solutions, Brad Jarvis, explained that “electronic prescriptions would curb the over-prescribing of opioids and prevent the highly addictive drugs from falling into the wrong hands,” adding, “People’s lives will be saved.”
Beyond the use of digitally signed e-prescriptions, HID Global has previously lauded the growing use of other technological solutions in healthcare such as OTP tokens, Public Key Infrastructure, and biometrics, all of which could play added roles in tracking electronic prescription transactions.
