Entrust Datacard Lends a Hand in Ghana eID Project

Entrust Datacard is helping the government of Ghana to roll out its first biometric electronic ID cards for citizens.

The company has been working with domestic partner Identity Management Systems (IMS), which in turn is carrying out the project for Ghana’s National Identification Authority. The new citizen ID cards feature both embedded chip technology and biometric support, and are expected to be issued to 16 million citizens this month.

Entrust Datacard’s printers are being used to rapidly issue the new cards. Other subcontractors involve din the IMS-led project include Dermalog, NXP Semiconductors, Intelligent Card Production Systems, X-Infotech, Cryptovision, Smart Packaging Solutions, and IDFG.

In a statement announcing its involvement in the project, Entrust Datacard highlighted its pioneering nature, asserting that it represents the first nationwide issuance of eIDs in West Africa. “Entrust Datacard technologies will enable the government of Ghana to improve service to its citizens and help ensure secure access to rights and services,” said Entrust Datacard EMEA VP Xavier Coemelck.
