Durin and Qualcomm Demo Edge AI Facial Recognition With UWB for Cloud-Free Home Access

Durin, Inc. and Qualcomm Technologies are demonstrating a residential access system at MWC Barcelona 2026 that combines edge facial recognition with UWB-enabled smartphone proximity detection, processing all biometric data entirely on local hardware without sending it to the cloud. The joint demonstration, running through March 5 at Qualcomm’s booth in Hall 3, pitches privacy-first edge processing as a practical alternative to cloud-dependent biometric access systems.

The technical architecture pairs a Qualcomm Dragonwing NPro A7 Elite Platform-powered Wi-Fi router running on-device facial recognition with the UWB radio in the user’s smartphone, via Qualcomm’s FastConnect platform, to confirm physical presence at the door with centimeter-level precision. Durin’s Door Manager combines both signals: an authorized face plus confirmed UWB proximity triggers the smart lock unlock, while either factor alone leaves the door locked, reducing the risk of spoofing and tailgating. The homeowner’s biometric data never leaves the home.

Durin describes UWB in the phone as the enabling infrastructure for hands-free home entry. The system supports single-factor configurations as well as the full multimodal setup. The company previously launched MagicKey in January 2026 as the first multi-factor home access system combining UWB proximity, facial recognition, and voice biometrics.

The demonstration builds on a trend visible since biometric locks gained prominence at CES 2025, with the market now moving toward multimodal, edge-processed systems designed to address consumer privacy concerns about biometric data storage. The Durin collaboration also reflects Qualcomm’s expanding biometrics partnerships, which have included a strategic engagement with Synaptics to advance fingerprint and touch technology for AI mobile devices.

The privacy framing is central to both companies’ messaging at MWC. As biometric access control expands from enterprise into residential settings, the debate over where biometric data is stored and processed has become a meaningful product differentiator. The Durin-Qualcomm system’s on-device architecture is a direct response to that concern, eliminating the cloud dependency that has drawn criticism in consumer biometric deployments.
