Synaptics and Qualcomm Announce Strategic Engagement to Advance Touch and Fingerprint Tech for AI PCs and Mobile

Synaptics and Qualcomm Technologies have formally announced a strategic engagement to integrate their respective technologies for touch control and biometric fingerprint sensing. The collaboration is set to create a new reference path for device manufacturers, combining Synaptics’ advanced touch controllers with Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic ultrasonic fingerprint sensors.

The partnership is aimed at the next generation of premium mobile devices and the emerging AI PC category, both of which are increasingly reliant on large, flexible, and ultra-thin OLED displays. As screen bezels disappear and display stacks become thinner, integrating high-performance touch and secure, under-display biometrics becomes significantly more challenging due to issues like signal noise and physical space constraints.

This engagement is designed to solve that integration problem for OEMs. By validating Synaptics’ touch and display driver integration (TDDI) portfolio with Qualcomm’s compute platforms and its industry-leading ultrasonic fingerprint solutions, the companies will provide a pre-optimized stack. This will simplify the design process for panel makers and device manufacturers, reducing driver and tuning cycles and ultimately accelerating time to market.

While the announcement did not name specific design wins, the collaboration will leverage the core strengths of both companies. Synaptics brings its Natural ID capacitive fingerprint solutions and its high-performance S3930-series touch controllers, which are engineered specifically for the demands of flexible, foldable OLED panels. Qualcomm contributes its 3D Sonic fingerprint technology, which uses sound waves to create a detailed 3D map of a user’s fingerprint, offering a higher level of security and spoof-detection than 2D optical sensors.

“Collaborating with Synaptics… opens the door to new and exciting possibilities for on-device, AI-enhanced user experiences,” said Dino Bekis, Vice President and GM at Qualcomm Technologies. This AI-enhanced aspect is key. The co-developed solutions are expected to unlock advanced features, using on-device AI to improve contextual awareness, enhance biometric spoof detection, and deliver a more seamless and secure user interface across the rapidly expanding OLED ecosystem.
