Dubai International Airport Launches ‘Unlimited Smart Travel’ for Rapid Biometric Immigration

Dubai International Airport (DXB) has launched the “Unlimited Smart Travel” initiative, enabling eligible passengers to clear passport control in about 14 seconds using facial recognition technology. The program, led by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs–Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai), is currently available in Terminal 3 lounges and eliminates manual document checks for travelers who meet specific eligibility criteria.

The new system uses a walk-through biometric corridor capable of processing up to 10 passengers simultaneously. It builds on earlier biometric initiatives launched in mid-2025 for airline crew members, expanding the use of AI-powered identity verification in Dubai’s aviation sector. Eligible travelers simply walk through the corridor, where facial recognition matches their identity against pre-registered government records, allowing for a seamless clearance process.

AI-Powered Passenger Processing

“AI is revolutionizing the UAE travel journey from start to finish,” said Omar Bin Adai, Chief Technology and Infrastructure Officer at Dubai Airports. The system is designed to maintain high security standards while significantly reducing the time passengers spend at passport control. While it eliminates manual document checks for eligible passengers, traditional verification remains in place for those who require additional screening based on visa or passport status.

The initiative is part of Dubai’s broader investment in smart travel technologies, which also includes plans for a borderless biometric travel system at the upcoming Al Maktoum International Airport. These efforts place Dubai among the leading global hubs adopting advanced biometric border controls, alongside regions such as the European Union.

Global Context and Regulatory Trends

On July 8, 2025, the European Parliament approved a temporary derogation regulation to enable a progressive start of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which will modernize Schengen border checks for non-EU nationals. The European Commission has set October 12, 2025, as the launch date for phased operations. Like the EU, Dubai is implementing biometric systems aimed at streamlining passenger journeys while meeting security and regulatory requirements.

Authorities in Dubai have emphasized that eligibility for the Unlimited Smart Travel system depends on multiple factors, including the traveler’s nationality, passport, and visa. While the biometric corridor offers a faster option for many passengers, those not meeting the requirements will continue to use conventional passport control channels.

Neighboring countries in the region are exploring similar digital identity solutions for air travel, but Dubai’s system is notable for its ability to process large groups of travelers in seconds while maintaining security standards through advanced facial recognition technology.
