Dubai-based airline flydubai has joined forces with UAE technology company emaratech to install advanced biometric gates for crew members at Dubai International Airport, aiming to improve airport operations through the use of artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology.
The new smart gates have been introduced at flydubai’s Airport Operations Centre at Dubai International (DXB), providing pilots and cabin crew with a paperless and faster immigration process. The gates leverage AI-powered facial recognition and integrate in real time with both flydubai’s internal systems and immigration authorities, replacing traditional manual procedures and reducing wait times for airline staff.
“Through AI-powered facial recognition technology, our smart gates connect with both flydubai’s and immigration’s platforms, enabling real-time validation and a truly frictionless journey,” said His Excellency Thani Alzaffin, Group Chief Executive Officer of emaratech, highlighting the benefits of the system.
The implementation of biometric gates for flydubai staff reflects Dubai’s broader efforts to enhance efficiency across its travel infrastructure. The project comes on the heels of Dubai’s deployment of facial recognition technology at its cruise terminals, where new systems can process approximately 5,000 passengers in around 20 minutes, improving the speed and comfort of immigration procedures for travelers arriving by sea. These developments showcase how Dubai continues to adopt innovative technologies to streamline travel experiences.
The initiative also supports Dubai’s long-term digital transformation goals, which include plans for a borderless biometric travel experience at the future Al Maktoum International Airport. While the borderless concept remains in the planning phase, officials aim for it to be a key feature of the airport’s operations when it opens in the early 2030s, enabling seamless movement of travelers through facial recognition and other biometric tools without the need for physical documents.
Beyond the current rollout for flydubai crew members, flydubai and emaratech have signaled their intent to continue collaborating on expanding biometric and AI solutions across additional airport operations. Future applications could potentially extend these advanced systems to passengers, further transforming the airport experience for millions of travelers passing through Dubai each year.
