Dubai Airport is aiming for a ‘gate-less border’ with a new partnership with ObjectTech.
The company has been contracted to establish a passive traveler identification system based on biometrics and blockchain auditing, to which end it will work with Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners’ Affairs (GDRFA). Specifics concerning which biometric modalities will be used and how blockchain will come into play haven’t yet been revealed, but the ultimate aim is to enable travelers will be able to board, disembark, and collect baggage without the need to stop for passport inspection.
In a statement announcing the project, ObjectTech indicated that it’s working with the ISO on blockchain standards, and asserted that the Dubai Airport project on the whole is intended at making it “the most business and tourist friendly airport on earth”.
News of the project comes amid growing enthusiasm for biometric airport screening around the world, and a particularly busy period in the US, where government agencies like the TSA and the CBP are working with airports and airlines to trial biometric passenger screening systems.
