A recent Apple rumor speculates that the tech giant will not in fact be implementing an in-display Touch ID sensor in this year’s upcoming iPhone 14 series.
The report — courtesy of Cult of Mac — traces back to a Twitter thread of noted display industry veteran and expert Ross Young, in which he noted his belief that the 2022 edition of the iPhone will come with a hole-punch display. In the thread, Ross replied to a question about an in-display fingerprint sensor by saying he doesn’t see Touch ID making its way into this year’s lineup.
If true, this could come as a major disappointment for iPhone users who have been waiting for Apple to go multimodal with its biometric authentication while also providing an alternative to Face ID.
When and if Apple does finally decide to add fingerprint authentication back to its flagship phones, it could be playing catch-up with Google’s Pixel lineup.
A November 2021 report revealed that Google planned on including Face Unlock — its answer to Face ID — in last year’s Pixel 6 release, but instead chose to go with just an in-display fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication. In Google’s case however, it is suggested that Face Unlock can be added back to the Pixel phones at a later date via a software update.
Rumors of Apple moving to in-display Touch ID have been around for the better part of a year now, with many having predicted the feature would be included in the iPhone 13, which launched in the Fall of 2021.
Though this is still a rumor, Cult of Mac is careful to point out that Ross’s previous predictions regarding Apple products have been deemed 100% accurate thus far by website AppleTrack.
