The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has deployed an artificial intelligence-powered concierge system to assist staff in navigating the agency’s extensive policy documentation. The development builds upon DISA’s existing digital identity infrastructure, which includes biometric authentication systems and automated credentialing platforms implemented as part of the agency’s cybersecurity modernization efforts.
According to Steve Wallace, DISA’s chief technology officer and director of emerging technology directorate, the system has received authorization for agency-wide deployment following successful testing phases. The AI concierge system integrates with DISA’s existing software acquisition pathways and aligns with the Department of Defense’s Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) 2.0 requirements, which take effect December 16, 2024.
The implementation focuses primarily on helping staff efficiently access and interpret the agency’s extensive collection of policies and instructions, with particular emphasis on distinguishing between historical and current policies. This capability addresses a long-standing challenge in policy management within defense agencies, where multiple versions of documents often exist simultaneously.
Building on this foundation, DISA is expanding its AI implementation beyond policy management into software engineering applications, including code modernization for legacy systems. The agency is also investigating AI-driven bot detection capabilities to enhance its cybersecurity defense systems, leveraging its existing identity verification infrastructure.
In discussing these developments, Wallace emphasized that DISA’s AI initiatives are designed to complement rather than compete with other Department of Defense AI programs. This collaborative approach aligns with the DoD’s broader strategy of integrating AI capabilities across its various agencies while maintaining focused use cases specific to each organization’s operational needs.
