Digi Yatra Foundation Says Biometric Travel Platform Will Expand to International Flights

India’s Digi Yatra Foundation plans to extend its decentralized facial recognition platform from domestic airports to international flight operations, CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi announced.

The expansion would move Digi Yatra beyond domestic airport acceleration into cross-border passenger processing, raising new questions about interoperability, technical standards, and privacy implementation for airlines, airports, and border agencies operating in international contexts.

“Our multilingual rollout and international pilot program will further strengthen our commitment to making air travel inclusive and efficient,” Khadakbhavi said.

The platform crossed 10 million app downloads by the end of 2025, building on momentum from earlier growth that saw Digi Yatra hit 15 million downloads as India expanded biometric air travel infrastructure. The international flights announcement follows expansion to two more airports, which brought Thiruvananthapuram and Mangaluru into the network earlier in 2025.

The Digi Yatra Foundation positions the platform as decentralized and privacy-aware in its domestic deployment model. Extending the technology to international travel will require coordination with border control systems, foreign airport operators, and potentially airline alliances that handle cross-border passenger flows. International implementations may also need to address varying regulatory frameworks for biometric data collection and cross-border data sharing across different jurisdictions.

Khadakbhavi’s remarks echo plans for international expansion first shared when the platform surpassed 9 million users in early 2025, indicating the cross-border roadmap has been in development for several months.

The timeline for international service launch was not specified in the announcement. Implementation will likely require pilot programs with partner airports and regulatory alignment on biometric data handling standards across jurisdictions. The foundation will need to establish interoperability protocols with international airport systems and ensure compliance with both Indian and foreign data protection regulations.

Digi Yatra currently operates at domestic airports across India, allowing enrolled passengers to use facial recognition for identity verification at security checkpoints and boarding gates. The system stores biometric templates on users’ devices rather than in a central database, according to foundation materials.

The decentralized architecture distinguishes Digi Yatra from centralized biometric travel systems deployed in other markets. Whether this model can be adapted for international travel, which typically involves government border control agencies with their own identity verification requirements, remains to be demonstrated through the planned pilot programs.

The platform’s multilingual capabilities, mentioned by Khadakbhavi, will become more critical in international contexts where passenger populations are more diverse than domestic travel segments.
