The US Department of Homeland Security‘s Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is organizing “Biometric Technology Rallies” for next year, the agency has announced.
The ‘rallies’ will essentially be live trials of biometric technologies. The first, to be held in March at the Maryland Test Facility in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, “will challenge industry to provide biometric systems to meet the requirements of high-throughput recognition of users within identity verification operations,” according to a statement from the DHS, with systems based on facial and iris recognition to be the focus. And the event will include “controlled testing of candidate technologies in relevant scenarios.”
The testing will be based on the DHS S&T’s Biometric Technology Engine, an evaluation program launched by the agency this year. The results will be used to help the DHS and associated researchers to plan and develop future technologies and capabilities, and will also be shared with industry participants to help them improve their solutions.
The DHS S&T hasn’t yet announced any details about other Biometric Technology Rallies, but is inviting parties interested in the March event to submit a white paper and video demo by December 8th, with approved participants to be notified on December 18th. The event is being co-sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
