The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is collaborating with SpruceID to enhance the privacy and security of digital credentials for cross-border interactions. Part of the DHS’s Silicon Valley Innovation Program (SVIP), the initiative aims to establish secure, interoperable digital identity tools to assist U.S. residents with travel, immigration, and employment verification.
Digital credentials face risks such as identity theft and unauthorized access due to interoperability challenges and insufficient data control mechanisms. In response to these risks, the DHS issued a solicitation in 2023 under the Privacy Preserving Digital Credential Wallets & Verifiers topic call, seeking solutions to create a secure digital credentialing ecosystem. The solicitation supports DHS components like U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), focusing on building privacy-preserving digital wallets.
SpruceID’s role centers on leveraging its open-source libraries to build digital credential wallets and verifiers. These tools will align with global standards, particularly those set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), such as the Verifiable Credential Data Model (VCDM) and Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs). By adhering to these standards, SpruceID’s technology will ensure that digital credentials used for DHS applications are interoperable, secure, and able to function across various sectors, including finance and healthcare.
As part of the collaboration, SpruceID will work on enhancing its wallet and verifier capabilities to meet DHS’s specific privacy and security requirements. This includes incorporating privacy-preserving components that can be directly integrated into DHS’s credentialing systems.
Through the partnership, DHS aims to create a standardized framework that other public and private entities can adopt, supporting a broad spectrum of applications beyond immigration and border control.
The news comes shortly after the state of California began allowing residents to add their digital IDs to the Apple Wallet. SpruceID provided the issuance platform for the digital ID, through a collaboration with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
